Write-back to Excel (File System Access)
What is write-back?
Write-back lets you edit rows in SheetForge and have those changes automatically saved back to your original Excel file on your computer - no export/import cycle needed.
Requirements
- Browser: Chrome or Edge only (uses the File System Access API, not supported in Firefox or Safari)
- Plan: Pro plan or higher
- File format: Excel (.xlsx) files only
How to connect your Excel file
- Go to sheetforge.ai/generate-app
- Click "Connect to file" in the file upload area
- Your browser will show a file picker - select your Excel file
- Grant read/write permission when prompted
- SheetForge will load your file and immediately have a live connection to it
How auto-save works
Every time you edit or add a row in your generated app, SheetForge automatically writes the updated data back to your Excel file. You will see a "Saved" confirmation in the header. If you close and reopen the file in Excel, your changes will be there.
Multi-sheet Excel files
When your Excel file has multiple sheets and you have selected all of them in SheetForge, write-back updates all sheets simultaneously, preserving each tab and its data.
Important: Write-back only works in the current browser session. If you close the tab, you will need to reconnect to your file next time.
